Developing a contemporary chandelier
As part of the refurbishment of the church in Grabs, Monolicht developed two specially designed chandeliers in close collaboration with lighting designer Julia Hartmann of Lightsphere. They take up the traditional formal language while integrating modern lighting technology. The chandeliers combine several lighting functions in one central object:
Direct, targeted light from integrated, adjustable spots for the precise illumination of the altar area and the seating. Indirect light for a gentle brightening of the space and to emphasise the high wooden ceiling. Decorative light through fluted glass, which gives the chandelier depth and lets it act as an object in its own right – echoing the historic models. Particular attention was paid to integrating modern technology without visually compromising the sacred space. The complete projector mount was integrated into one of the chandeliers, so that the projection technology is embedded discreetly and in keeping with the architecture.
In addition to the two special chandeliers, Monolicht supplied surface-mounted and pendant luminaires from the Boya family. They support the lighting concept with a combination of deep, precise light and diffuse ambient brightening, and complement the decorative effect of the chandeliers in a restrained way.
The result is a project that unites tradition and contemporary technology – functional, atmospheric and coherent in design.
