Biophilic light by monolicht

Luminaires and lighting design that bring greenery into interiors – developed on the basis of scientific research into ornamental indoor plants. For strong plants and greater wellbeing.

Starting point

Greenery indoors rarely fails because of the plant.

Without light, even the best care will not help. For photosynthesis, plants need a minimum amount of light in the right spectrum – and for enough hours per day. That is exactly where we come in.

No daylight indoors

Atrium, basement, zones far from windows: to the eye it looks bright, for the plant it is darkness. Just a few metres from the window the usable amount of light drops dramatically.

Our solution: We measure the actual situation and add exactly the amount of light your planting needs.

Plants struggle despite good care

Yellow leaves, long thin growth, bare patches: typical signs of a lack of light – not of too little water or fertiliser. Replanting then happens on a yearly cycle.

Our solution: Specially developed light spectra for ornamental indoor plants instead of replacement planting.

A planting concept without lighting design

The planting is planned, the light is not. Many standard luminaires do not provide enough photosynthetically active radiation for ornamental indoor plants.

Our solution: Lighting design in parallel with the planting concept – matched to plant species, height and location.

Process

From the idea to a thriving plant.

A clear process – you always know what we are working on and what matters.

Step 1

Needs analysis

Which plant species, what ceiling height, which location? We record the light requirement for each plant group and measure the available daylight on site.

Step 2

Light calculation

Based on the project-specific parameters of the vigoro technology we calculate PPFD and DLI for your planting and derive the number of luminaires, their output and the operating hours.

Step 3

Luminaire selection & placement

Track, recessed or pendant – we choose the form, spectrum and beam angle so that lighting effect and architecture fit together.

Step 4

Commissioning & follow-up

We set the lighting hours and dimming and check again after the establishment phase – so the installation keeps performing as it should.

Fundamentals

Light for plants is measured differently.

Lux describes how bright it is for the human eye. For plants, what counts is photosynthetically active radiation. That is why vigoro does not work with general guide values but with parameters defined individually for each project:

Design parameter
What it describes
How we determine it
PPFDµmol/m²/s
Amount of light reaching the leaf surface per second
Calculated per project – according to plant species, location and daylight situation
DLImol/m²/Tag
Total amount of light accumulated over the day
Derived from PPFD and operating hours – both are designed together
Spectrum
Composition of the light in the photosynthetically active range (400–700 nm)
Specially developed light spectra for ornamental indoor plants
Light distribution & position
How the light actually reaches the plant
Matched to plant species and spatial situation – distance and position matter too

Our measurements show that even within a single installation the available amount of light differs markedly depending on position and distance from the luminaire. That is precisely why we plan every installation individually – instead of working with blanket target values.
